Island Park, Idaho – Your Basecamp to Yellowstone National Park
When my family visits Yellowstone National Park, we always choose to stay in Island Park, Idaho—and for good reason. Just 20–30 minutes from Yellowstone’s West Entrance, Island Park offers the perfect balance of convenience and tranquility. It’s close enough to get an early start in the park but far enough away to escape the crowds at the end of the day.
Beyond its unbeatable location, Island Park boasts stunning landscapes, abundant outdoor recreation, and rich history. Whether you’re staying at the modern Springhill Suites Island Park (formerly Macks Inn), renting a cozy cabin, or camping under the stars, you’ll find the perfect place to rest after a day of adventure.
For us, staying in Island Park makes every Yellowstone trip even more memorable. From exploring the breathtaking Mesa Falls to visiting the charming Johnny Sack’s Cabin, there’s always something new to discover. In this post, I’ll share why Island Park is our go-to basecamp, highlight the best places to stay, and give you a glimpse of the incredible outdoor adventures waiting just beyond the park’s borders.
Where to Stay in Island Park
Whether you’re traveling with a large group and need a rustic cabin with private spaces, an adventurer eager to camp under the stars or stay in a glamping tent, or someone who prefers the comfort of a hotel with modern amenities, Island Park has something for everyone.
Springhill Suites Island Park
Choosing to stay at the Springhill Suites Island Park, is a no brainer for us. My mother grew up staying at this same location when it was Macks Inn. We had the pleasure of staying at Macks Inn before they changed it to a hotel with modern amenities.
Located along the picturesque Henry’s Fork River, its a location where adventure and serenity come together. Whether you’re wanting to relax by the rivers edge watching for wildlife, or looking for some adventure, this spot has it all.
Included in your stay is continental breakfast, indoor heated pool and an outdoor covered hot tub overlooking the river, to the Mack’s Inn River Adventure and eBike Rental where you can rent kayaks, rafts, canoes and stand-up paddle boards.

Whether you’re traveling with a large group, or looking for more privacy and space, to the convenience of cooking your own meals, vacation rentals can be a great option.
- VRBO A vacation rental hub that is a great place to search for options that best suits your travel needs. From large modern homes, to rustic cabins secluded in the forrest, there are many places to choose from.
- Ponds Lodge This is another fan favorite when talking with others about Island Park and has been around since the 1920’s. If you’re looking for a log cabin small enough for two or a cabin for 10-20 people, Ponds Lodge has it. The cabins are spread out throughout the property, giving you the tranquility of privacy that you may be looking for when staying at a vacation rental while also giving you the convenience of a restaurant and bar onsite.
Camping
Do you have your own camper, or want to stargaze under a canvas tent? There are plenty of campgrounds in Island Park for you. Campgrounds book up fast, so make sure to book in advance to get the spot or location you want.

Glamping
Do you want to camp but look forward to having it all set up for you? Check out Wander Camp Yellowstone. I have yet to stay in a glamping tent but it’s on my list! This place looks amazing, There are flushing toilets, showers, fire pits and clean linens. Added bonus, if you are really wanting to have the camping experience while not lifting a finger, they have a food truck onsite, The Canteen offering camp-style dishes.

Exploring the Outdoors
One of the best things about staying in Island Park is the endless outdoor adventure right at your doorstep. Whether you enjoy fishing in world-class waters, hiking through scenic trails, or paddling along calm rivers, this area is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. With its vast forests, pristine lakes, and abundant wildlife, Island Park offers plenty of ways to immerse yourself in nature before or after your Yellowstone adventures.
Johnny Sack’s Cabin
Talk about escaping to a cabin in the woods! Located 5 miles from Macks Inn at Big Springs, Idaho, you will discover this gem tucked away in the woods called Johnny Sack’s Cabin. A short walking trail through the forest will lead you to the cabin, where you can tour the cabin during the summer season, starting in mid-June and continuing through mid-September.

Mesa Falls
Just another short drive from Island Park is this beautiful waterfall called Mesa Falls that is definitely worth visiting. I love waterfalls, so if there is ever one near by, you can catch me there! There are two viewing points, Upper and Lower Falls. We have yet to visit Lower Falls, but from the pictures, it looks like one worthing checking out.
